Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Following trauma, infection, or elective abdominal surgery, patients can develop an abdominal wall hernia. While many of these hernias are repaired by general surgeons, there are certain large hernias that are repaired in concert with a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon as well. Dr. Pathy works together with general surgeons in these more complex instances to reconstruct the abdominal wall.
These extensive hernias often require a reconstructive technique called “separation of components” in which the multiple muscular layers of the abdomen are separated so that they can slide upon themselves to close the large abdominal defect. A specialized material is added to strengthen the repair and limit recurrence of the hernia. |
